Herrin Elementary student heading to Nationals for Archery

HERRIN, Ill. (WSIL) -- A fourth grade student from Herrin has qualified for competing in the National Archery in the Schools Program National Tournament coming up.

Over the weekend, Jaylin Lewis, along with her classmates in elementary, junior high and high school, attended the Illinois State archery competition in Mattoon.

The brought 14 students of various grades to the competition, with some achieving some personal best scores.

Jaylin Lewis placed 6th out of 67 elementary girls. This qualified her to move on to Nationals as she had a personal best score of 242.

Flying Tigers Assistant Coach, Chris Tuthill, says, "She has grown, really all the archers have grown. I mean, we went to state and we had I think five that shot PRs, which are personal records, so that's no complaint. I mean Jaylin, she just come of the woods Saturday. Yeah, I couldn't believe it, none of us could, but I'm proud of her. She's put in the work and you can tell."

The US Eastern National Tournament will take place on May 8 - 10 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
