MARION It was a full opening day at the PONY Colt World Series being held over the next several days at Rent One Park.  We had the opening ceremonies sandwich between four first round games, including a walk-off, extra innings battle to close the day.

Covina (CA) started the day by beating Greensboro (NC) 10-3.  The Czech Republic then needed only five innings to dispatch Bay County (MI) 10-0.  One of the two host teams, Marion, fell to Brownsville (TX) 11-5.  Marion will at noon Saturday in the losers bracket.

The tourney took a break from game play to hold its official opening ceremony, where all ten teams were introduced and came out on the field.

Then it was time for the nightcap between Mexico and the second host team, the ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois squad.  This one turned out to be the game of the day.

Mexico built a 4-1 lead, but ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois rallied.  Derek Williams launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 4-3.

Then in the seventh, ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois put runners on first and third with one out for Austin Jerger.  Jerger hit a bouncer to second, and when Mexico was unable to turn a double play to end the game, Kannon Cantrell scored to tie the game 4-4 and force extra innings.

Gavin Baldwin led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple to right center.  Chase Dodson hit the very next pitch into center field.  Baldwin scored the game winning run as ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois rallied for the 5-4 win.  They will take Saturday off and return to action Sunday at 5:00.
