HERRIN —ÌýFew teams locally can match what the Herrin Tigers have done in recent years.
Jason Karnes has led his teams to the playoffs in 12 of his 13 years, including the last nine straight.ÌýÌýHe has piled up 100 wins against only 40 losses in that time span.
Karnes credits consistency in his coaching staff and hungry players.
"The kids expect to win," Karnes said.Ìý "We know each Friday night or Saturday afternoon, we’ve got a bulls eye on our backs, but that’s the way we like it. ÌýI just think the kids here in Herrin love to compete, and they’re very physical kids and very hardworking kids here. Ìý"
The Tigers will open their season Friday night on the road at Waterloo.
Karnes and the Herrin athletic department will be donating 500-dollars to the memorial set up for Illinois State trooper Nick Hopkins, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this week.
Hopkins played for Waterloo.
Herrin will be accepting more donations the next couple of days.
