WHO gives reminders to those with COVID fatigue

(WSIL)--COVID fatigue is when people get tired of wearing masks and social distancing. And a year into the pandemic, many are starting to feel the effects.

"If I'm feeling sick, I'm definitely not gonna be around other people but I think it's like any other virus. We're gonna probably all catch it at some point. There's a very high survival rate so I think everyone should fellowship and community and continue to live their life," said Herrin resident Naomi Smith.

With several areas seeing spikes in COVID cases, the WHO released information reminding the public that the pandemic is not over yet.

The WHO says to remember Location, Proximity, and Time.

  • Location: being outside in a well ventilated area can help lower your chance of contracting the virus.
  • Proximity--staying six feet apart is the minimum--staying farther away is even better.
  • And limiting your time around someone who may have COVID-19 to fifteen minutes or less.

"So that guidance is not new, they are just making sure that people continue to follow it," said Shawnna Rhine from the ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Seven Health Department.

And even though the number of vaccinations is rising, Rhine advises being cautious.

"It's with those individuals who we don't know have been fully vaccinated. We want to still continue to wear our masks, we want to continue to follow the social distancing guidelines, because you can still spread the virus even if you've been fully vaccinated," said Rhine.

And for those who tired of wearing masks and social distancing, officials remind everyone that these guidelines are to help save lives.

"So for me to wear a mask even though I've been fully vaccinated, I'm thinking about those around me who haven't. And we still need to keep that mindset going and make sure that we all get through this and keep doing what we need to do to be safe," said Rhine.

Rhine also said these reminders of location, proximity, and time are what the IDPH and the CDC have been following since the beginning of the pandemic.
