CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A Carbondale man faces charges after police said he hit someone and barricaded himself in a home with an infant child on Thursday.

The Carbondale Police Department said officers responded to the 400-block of South Poplar Street on December 5 at 1:38 a.m.

Once they got there, police said Joseph Clopton, 39 of Carbondale, hit another person and then barricaded himself inside a home with his infant child.

Police said officers surrounded the home and started negotiating with Clopton, which lasted for several hours. At one point, officers were able to get a search warrant to enter the apartment.

Later, at 7:46 a.m., Clopton surrendered peacefully and was then taken into custody. Police said they cited him with charges of Domestic Battery, Endangering the Life or Health of a Child and Resisting a Police Officer.

The infant not injured and was turned over to his mother, police stated.

Clopton was taken to the Jackson County Jail.
