Reported tornado in Williamson County leaves homes destroyed, injures three

MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- A possible tornado recently hit the south end of Williamson County, leaving behind significant damage and injuries.

Three people were injured and taken to the hospital as a result of the tornado, Williamson County EMA reported.

One subdivision suffered extensive damage, with multiple homes heavily damaged or destroyed.

The tornado hit an area south of Marion but north of Lake of Egypt.

The United States Penitentiary south of Marion was also damaged from the storm. County officials said there has not been anyone reported injured at this site due to the storms though.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter for Friday night to provide a safe place to stay, meals, and assistance from Red Cross volunteers.

The location is at the Cornerstone Church at 2705 Walton Way in Marion, Illinois.

Multiple roads are currently shut down in Williamson County, including a portion of Interstate 57.
