Planning your evening

WSIL(Carterville, Ill.) -- This evening, we are tracking scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder that are entering in to our southern and western counites across southern Illinois.

This rain and thunder will become more widespread through the evening, with steady rain expected to last between now and 7 to 9 PM. After this, showers and thunderstorms will become more scattered overnight tonight. A few of the could be on the strong to severe side. However, this is a highly conditional risk, as there will be lack-luster amounts of instability. If a stronger storm does form, the primary hazards will be damaging winds and a brief tornado.

Independent of any strong storms, we will see strong winds persist through the evening and through the day tomorrow. This is due to the region being in between air masses. Expect winds to be in the range of 15 to 25 miles per hour, sustained, with gusts potentially running as high as 50 miles per hour.

During the overnight hours, we will see a cold front sweep through the region. As it does, we will see any thunderstorms exit the region to the east. Behind the front, we will see some lingering moisture, so a few isolated sot scattered showers will be possible through tomorrow morning. As temperatures cool, there is a chance some of these showers could transition over to flurries in the afternoon, but no accumulations are expected.

Speaking of the temperatures, tomorrow will have a high of around 50, but it will be arriving in the pre-dawn hours, while most folks are sleeping. Morning temperatures will be in the low to mid 40s, but through the day, temperatures will cool. They will reach the mid 30s by tomorrow evening's commute.

Skies will clear and turn mostly sunny for Thursday, but temperatures will be on the cooler side, with things in the upper 40s to 50. Warmer, spring-like conditions are expected to return as we head into Friday.
