WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -- The Williamson County Emergency Management Agency (WCEMA) stated they, along with the City of Marion Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), have opened a joint Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Marion due to the large amount of visitors in the area.

They said this is a preventative measure as so many are in the area to enjoy the eclipse.

"We certainly don't anticipate any major issues," said Williamson County EMA Director Brian Burgess. "But anytime you have multiple large gatherings in an area it's better to be ready for the unexpected."

Burgess said the operations, public information, communications and logistics areas will be staffed and that the local Emergency Operations Center will coordinate the southern Illinois Emergency Operations Center with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

The WCEMA and MEMA will be in a supporting role status to area first responders, Burgess stated.

"The most likely hazards involve injuries from traffic accidents," said Burgess. "With the heavy traffic that includes many drivers who are unfamiliar with local roads, we urge you to drive with extra care."
